Professor Francois Cheng in his books Chinese poetic writing and Empty and Full, the Language of Chinese Painting, applies the techniques of structuralism and semiology to the analysis of Chinese traditional poetry and painting. These are the first scholarly works applying Western contemporary literary theories to the analysis of Chinese classical arts. Both his essays and literary works result from the dialogue between Eastern and Western cultures and reflect the deep harmony that exists between them.
