Objective: This study was designed to investigate energy metabolism in skeletal muscle of amputated limb and its clinical relevance. Methods: Energy metabolism of hind limbs in rats at 36℃ was defined with ^(31)P magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Results: During limb ischemia, intracellular pH, PCr and ATP levels decreased while intracellular Pi increased. As a result, a significant decrease in PCr/Pi ratio was also demonstrated. Conclusion: The dynamic changes in energy metabolism of skeletal muscles of amputated limbs may be rapidly and accurately monitored with ^(31_)P magnetic resonance spectroscopy so that the metabolic deterioration of muscle in the amputated limb and indication for replantation will be determined.
