榉木（Zelkova spp．）作为中国古典家具用材在家具发展史上所起到的独特作用可能是其它木材难以企及的。榉木又称椐木，汉·许慎《说文解字》“椐，桢也，从木，居声，九余切。”“愦，椐也，从木，贵声，求位切。”这是有关榉木比较早的注解与注音。文博专家王世襄在多部明式家具研究的著作中对于榉木及榉木家具的评价并不逊于黄花黎、紫檀，“论其艺术价值与历史价值，实不应在其它贵重木材家具之下”（王世襄《明式家具研究》文字卷第143页，
