Abstract The word “document” appeared in ancient time, but its definition has always been an issue in the academic circle. This article summarizes the developing process of the concept of document and proclaims its intrinsic attributes by the study of different views of experts at all times,including 4 basic elements: the information attribute of document, the discrimination attribute of symbols, the solid state attribute of carries, and the appearence attribute of the formation of document.
