Objective To assess the volume difference in the cerebral white matter between school aged children with high functioning ( IQ≥70) autism (HFA) and healthy children controls. Methods Voxel based morphometry (VBM) in conjunction with statistical parametric mapping was applied to the structural magnetic resonance images of 17 HFA patients and 15 normal controls. Results Compared with the controls, the white matter volume in HFA patients sig- nificantly decreased in the left hemisphere ( P = O. 050), right anterior cingulated and left superior parietal lobule ( P 〈 O. 001 ). Conclusions Our study reveals decreases in volume of white matter in HFA which suggest that deficits in white matter is one of the important pathological changes in school aged HFA.
