This paper tries to make a tentative application of speech - act theory to the analysis of irony in The Cast of Amontillado. The analysis is done both from a macro - angle and from a micro - angle, aiming at exploring the various ironic speech acts in this novel In this way, not only can the understanding of ironic speeches be deepened, but it also facilitates us to understand its ironic topic deeply and thoroughly.
