On the Reduction of Film Subtitling

影视字幕翻译与其他文学作品不同,其他文学作品可以运用多种翻译技巧充分的翻译,而影视字幕翻译由于受时间和空间的限制,在翻译时必须采用减译的翻译方法。减译是字幕翻译中最常用的翻译技巧,也是字幕翻译的最显著特点。减译可分成四类即缩译,略译,简化,删译。

Film subtitling differs from other literary works. Other literary works can be translated fully by using various skills, but subtitling translation has to use the strategy of reduction while being translated because of its constrained time and space. The most frequently used strategy in subtitling is reduction which is also the most striking feature of subtitling. Reduction can be divided into four categories, that is, condensation, decimation, reductive paraphrasing and deletion.
