A Brief history of Macao′s Medicine

澳门医学史可概括为三个阶段。即鸦片战争以前，为第一阶段：澳门的医学发展与大陆密不可分，中医药学处于主导地位。鸦片战争之后，至１９７４年葡国革命前，为第二阶段：西洋医学在澳门迅速传播并统治了澳门医界，中医药降为从属地位，民办医疗机构得到较大发展。葡国革命后至现在，为第三阶段：葡国给予澳门政府以较大的自治权，使澳门经济得以腾飞，医疗卫生事业有长足发展，形成以基层和医院卫生护理两体系相结合的医疗服务体制。但中医药步伐相对缓慢滞后。相信伴随１９９９年澳门回归祖国和特区基本法的实施，全澳在医学大发展的同时。

The authors generalize Macao medical history into three stages. The first stage was before the Opium War (Britain′s invasion of China, 18401842). during which Macao′s medical development was related to mainland of China inseparably, with Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) played a leading role. The second stage was from the Opium War to 1974 (before the Revolution of Portugal); Western medicine spreaded rapidly and swayed medical field in Macao, TCM was reduced to a subordinate status, the medical establishment run by the local people had rather rapid development. The third stage is after Revolution of Portugal to now, along with Macao economy developed repidly, medical and health service had great advances. It formed the medical service system of the hospital hygiene nursing system, combined with the primary health system. But TCM′s step is relatively slow and fall behind. The authors believe that accompaning with Macao return to the motherland in 1999 and the carrying out of special region′s basic law, TCM in Macao will be changed greatly along with the tremendous progress of medical science.
