叶适《宿觉庵记》解读

On Ye Shi's Su Jue An Ji

叶适,南宋永嘉学派著名学者。其早年即接触佛教,中年读佛经千卷,对佛学造诣颇深,晚年出资重修温州佛教名山松台山寺院,游居其间,并作《宿觉庵记》,流露出他对待佛学的矛盾态度:一方面叶适认为佛学为"世外瑰奇之说",与本朝治乱本不相关;另一方面他对自己的佛学造诣颇为自许,对学者学佛不得要领多有讥讽。

Ye Shi was a renowned scholar of Yongjia School of the Southern Song Dynasty. He was familiar with Buddhism in his early years, finished reading thousands of Buddhist scriptures in his middle age, and had professional knowledge about Buddhism. He helped to rebuild the Buddhist temple at the foot of Songtai hill in Wenzhou in his old age. While he was stayed there he wrote Su Jue An Ji, which demonstrated his contradictory attitude towards Buddhism. On the one hand, he thought Buddhism belonged to exotic thing which had nothing to do with the Dynasty＇s policies; and on the other hand, he was very proud of his knowledge about Buddhism and looked down upon those scholars who could not grasped the spirit of Buddhism during their studies.
