Since the publication of Kate Chopin's short novel The Awakening in 1899, the critics have made various comments on the characters and even more arguments on Edna's suicide, because the author made no clear judgment in her work. Both the text and the author's life background unfolded the author's contradictory thoughts toward the new woman's immoral acts, more traditional and conservative than liberal and confrontational.
