On translation of film titles from the theory perspective of relevance and linguistic adaptation

电影片名既是一部影片不可分割的部分,又超然于故事主体之外,与影片之间是一种合作和对话的关系。片名既需要整个影片故事提供语境,又具有自身独立的审美要求。电影片名的特殊作用和功能,决定了片名翻译与众不同的特征。本文试图从关联理论和语境顺应理论的视角,探讨电影片名的翻译策略。

A movie title is an inseparable part of a movie, but aloof from the main subject, which forms a cooperative and dialogic rela- tionship with the movie itself. It resorts to the movie story for its context of interpretation and has special aesthetic requirements. The u- niqueness of a movie title calls for special consideration in its English-Chinese translation. This paper tries to discuss the title translation strategies from the perspective of relevance theory and theory of linguistic adaptation.
