Appraisal system, a key issue in the interpersonal metafunction, plays a positive and constructive role in the coherence in discourse. Appraisal system can be further analyzed in terms of attitude, source, and grade, which is employed comprehensively in The Man in the Water, an article selected from the Contemporary College English Book 2. It is found in the research that the author takes advantage of the new lexico-grammar to set up the close interpersonal relationship with the readers.
