In the Ming and Qing Dynasties, many Chinese novels were introduced into Korea, Japan, and Vietnam, and this resulted in the prosperity of novel writing in Chinese in these East Asian countries. The introduction of Chinese novels was closely related to the great demand of people in these countries for learning the Chinese language. As these East Asian countries were trying to imitate the China's system and China was then the object of their cultural worship, it was possible for Chinese novels to be widely read in these countries, which in turn'facilitated the development of novel writing in Chinese in East Asia. It is in this process that novel writing in Korea, Japan and Vietnam gradually formed their local and cultural characteristics.
