An Outline of the Studies of the Ancient Shu Vocabulary

古蜀地的主体民族应该是在语言上和汉语有亲属关系的一个民族,蜀语是中上古时期汉语的重要方言,因为时代绵远,文献不足征,考察古蜀语的词汇,是一个难题。扬雄《方言》、许慎《说文》和前人的一些注释中有少量这样的词,对其进行研究具有文献学和语言学的双重价值。

The major group in ancient Shu must be one using a language kin to the Chinese language. The Shu language is an important dialect in later ancient times. Because of the inadequate records of the remote past, it is difficult to study the ancient Shu vocabulary. There are a few such words in the ancient literature like Yang Xiong＇s Dialect and Xu Shen＇s A Chinese Glossary, whose studies have the dual value of documentation science and linguistics.
