The indicative function of biological indicators in the monitoring, assessment and prevention of environmental heavy metal pollution and its research status are reviewed. The fundamental theory of biological indication is introduced. The biological indicative function for soil, water and air pollution is analyzed. The selection of appropriate biological indicators is the key to play the indicative function of biological indicators. The limitations of biological indicators are pointed out, and the countermeasures are proposed.
