Objective To evaluate whether the variations in the number of circulating endothelial progenitor cells(EPCs)CD34^+ could be presented as the maker of cardiovascular risk in patients (pts) with hypertension. Methods Sixty - two pts with hypertension and 20 healthy controls were collected. Pts stratified by cardiovascular risk factors according to Framingham risk factors score were divided into lowrisk group (n=18),mid- risk group (n=14), high- risk group (n= 17) and much- high- risk group (n = 13). The level of peripheral circulating EPCs CD34^+ was measured. The relationships between circulating EPCs CD34^+ and Framingham cardiovascular risk factors was analyzed. Results The level of peripheral circulating EPCs CD34^+ was significantly lower in pts with hypertension than that in control group (P〈0.05), and CD34^+ cells were inversely correlated with cardiovascular risks. There was a negative correlation between the level of circulating EPCs CD34^+ and Framingham cardiovascular risk factors(r= -0. 875,P〈0.01). Conclusion The level of peripheral circulating EPCs CD34^+ cells was significantly reduced with the increase of score of cardio vascular risk factors . This study demonstrated that the level of circulating EPCs was a predictor of cardiovascular risk in pts with hypertension.
