Edgar Allan Poe(1809-1849) was perhaps the least understood writer in his lifetime. Yet, time and the beauty in his writing have joined forces at last to establish his literary fame--he is now respected as a pioneer of the detective story, a founder of science fiction, a master of horror and mystery, and a singular even unique genius of his century. Nevertheless, nowadays many readers, including some scholars, still misread or distort Poe and his works. Based on close reading of all Poe' s poems and tales, some of his essays and reviews, the author of this paper analyses the causes of Poe' s unfortunate life, evaluates the beauty in his poetry and tales, and makes a thorough inquiry into his philosophical ideas and artistic convictions as well as the relationship between these two aspects. He points out that the philosophical ideas Poe articulates in his Eureka affords us the key to understanding his artistic convictions, and that only when we understand his artistic convictions can we fully perceive the profound meanings of Poe' s works. At the moment when the 200th anniversary of Edgar Allan Poe' s birth is coming, the author hopes that more and more people around the world would become the readers for whom Poe once said he could afford a century to wait.
