According to Halliday' s theory of metafunction, a text is a composite entity of three metafunctions. Therefore, an ideal translation is expected to realize equivalence in all the three metafunctions of the source text. However, this is often not possible due to differences in the contexts of the source text and the target text. In that case, it is necessary for the translator to find out the chief function of the source text by exploring its intentionality and strive to achieve equivalence in the chief function in translation. This paper makes a contrastive analysis of metafunctions between the "tail story" in Alice in Wonderland and its three Chinese versions, which serves as an evidence to show the importance of the equivalence in the chief function in English-Chinese translation.
