From the perspective of post-structuralism, Benjy in "The Sound and she Fury" written by Faulkner is a symbolic character which serves as the opposition to Phonecentrism, logic-centrism and ethnocentrism in traditional western culture. In his "sound" and "fury", the voice separates from the meaning. The disorderly sense of time and space in his stream of consciousness actually shows the separation of the Signified and the Signifier. His "moaning" is only a kind of voice, a sign with the Signified, but not communicable. The subjectivity of Benjy could not be established successfully. What he could do is to "bellow", and to "bellowed slowly, abjectly, without tears ; the grave hopeless sound of all voiceless misery under the sun".
