THERE were a ralt of idols worshiped in old China, but all were demolished alter the People＇s Republic was founded in 1949. Even Confucius, with his age-old officially conferred title of Sage, was no longer valorized. With new values and new ideology, a pantheon of new icons was created, with Mao Zedong at its center.
