During the 1950＇s and 1960＇s, the propagation of Buddhism in United States was characterized by its combination with counter - culture movements, triggered by the artists of the Beat Generation. The Beat Generation writers adopted Zen Buddhism in their revolt against anything traditional, and brought Buddhism to the American consciousness. The exploration on the relationship between the Beat Generation and Zen Buddhism sheds light on the cross -cultural study on the 20th century.
