"以诗写剧"是最能体现曹禺话剧创作个性的特点之一,也是他区别同时代话剧作家的显著特色,就创作主体而言,曹禺多次宣称他以"诗"写"剧"。与曹禺诗化戏剧形成鲜明对比的是,老舍在他的话剧创作中也融合了别种文学体裁的特长,但不是诗而是小说。老舍创造性地把小说与戏剧这两种最为显要的现代文学文体结合起来,创立了极具个性特色的"小说化戏剧",使成熟于20世纪上半叶的中国话剧在特殊的政治时代,没有完全跌入低谷,在文艺家们普遍迷失自我的红色岁月依旧为中国甚至世界戏剧观众奉献出独具个性风采的"小说化戏剧"精品。
