It is generally believed that A. S. Byatt's first novel The Shadow of the Sun falls into the pattern a female Bildungsroman whose title suggests the tension between the father and the daughter as that between the sun and its shadow. Based on an intertextualized mechanism of characters' body imagery in Byatt' s fiction at large, the essay analyzes the father's body as an intertextualized image with that of Samson in the Bible and hence gives rise to a new interpretation of the father's personality and mentality as paralleled by those of Samson. Contrary to the conventional description of the father as a monolithic patriarchal oppressor, the figure is revealed to have moral complexity and character development. While charting the daughter's growth, the novel also concerns the father's anxiety over his dual identity as a father and a writer and hence leaves much room for his character development.
