Reflections on China's Heated Arguments of How the Steel Was Tempered in the Centuries Past and Present

世纪之交,当《钢铁是怎样炼成的》在他的祖国日渐暗淡了光辉,在中国却借着媒体的造势成了一个"热点"。同名电视剧"热播",评论界热衷于对其作好坏是非的价值判断,在普通读者那里,小说又被当作一部"被意识形态化了的非意识形态小说",一方面小说充满了一种朴素的阶级感情,狂热的献身精神,革命的禁欲主义;另一方面,小说所隐含的情感因素、励志色彩,又吸引、感动了不少中国读者。《钢铁》在中国的接受,也就成了一个引人注目的文学、文化现象。

The novel How the Steel Was Tempered, as the 21st century came, gradually out the sight of readers in its homeland. However, it became a ＂heated point＂ in China through the propaganda of media. The TV series adapted from the novel enjoyed high viewing rate, and lots of critics gave their evaluations of right and wrong on the novel. In readers＇part, however, the novel was regarded as an ideologized non - ideological novel： on one hand, it was filled with the simple sentiment of social class, the spirit of passionate devotion and revolutionary abstinence; on the others the emotion and encouragement in it attracted and moved lots of Chinese readers. The acceptance of the novel in China thus became a noticeable phenomenon both literarily and culturally.
