摘要 The scene-a single earthen bed in a poverly-stricken farming area of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region in the far west of China.Shared by a whole family,the bed is packed with some two dozen youngsters,among them infants and a baby.Not one of them is wearing pants.The earthen bed,known as a kang,has a narrow wooden trough attached to the side facing the door,and from this the family eats its"meals"-more often than not a watery gruel of maize or sorghum flour.
