"Westernization Movement"as Translation of Yangwu Yundong:An Anatomy

"洋务运动"与其英译名Westernization Movement的内涵与外延并不相同。"洋务运动"关乎技术与实业,而Westernization Movement则关乎观念的西化,二者基本不具备语义交集。Westernization Movement之译名是对"洋务运动"的曲解,应为其正名。New Policies Movement和National Self-Strengthening Movement两译名与"洋务运动"之实更为相符。

The intension and extension of Yangwu Yundong are markedly different from those of ＂Westernization movement＂, its supposed translation. Semantically, the two hardly share things in common, for Yangwu Yundong involves technology, business and commerce, whereas ＂ Westernization movement＂ is associated with the transformation of ideology. Therefore, ＂ Westernization movement＂ as the long-established English translation of Yangwu Yundong is a distortion of the historical event and thus should be set right. ＂New Policies Movement＂ and ＂National Self-Strengthening Movement＂ may be more appropriate translations for the term.
