Objective To understand the change of Mannose-binding lectin (MBL) plasma concentration in children with infection caused by Streptococcus pnenmoniae, and to compare the difference of MBL plasma concentrations between healthy children and children infected by Streptococcus pneumoniae. Methods MBL plasma concentrations were measured by ELISA method with human MBL ELISA kit, and the MBL levels between two groups were analyzed with nonparametrie test by SPSS 11.0 (statistics package for social science). Results Data of MBL plasma concentrations were not normal distribution. The values of MBL plasma concentrations in healthy children( 105 case) ranged from 3 ng/ml to 6 025 ng/ml and the median was 1 057 ng/ml, and the values in children with infection caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae (49 case) ranged from 0 to 6 544 ng/ml and the median was 1 307 ng/ml. Mannose-binding lectin(MBL) plasma concentration in children with infection caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae was significantly higher than that in the healthy children. 5. 71% of the healthy children and 10.2% of children with infection children caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae had low MBL levels whose concentrations were less than 200 ng/ml, however, no significant difference was found between the two groups(Х^2 = 1.02, P 〉 0.05). Conclusion The research can not prove the correlation between the sensitivity to Streptococcus pneumoniae and Mannose-binding lectin (MBL) plasma concentration.
