American modem poet E. E. Cummings excels at variation and innovation of poetic language and expressiveness. This thesis tries to analyze the motive for his exploration in the following three aspects： the nature of being a painter, the extending of the function of language and his love for individuality and nature. In this way, we can get a better understanding of his unique writing style.
