The historical novel is a typical literary form in British Literature. It evolved from the Elizabethan regime and prospered in the 19th century, and fell into three phrases. In Scott＇s historical novels, the fate of the characters was restricted by the history; in the early period of Victoria regime, the characters in the historical novels did their efforts to get rid of the restriction of history and controlled their own destiny. In the middle and the last period of Victoria regime, history in historical novels were controlled by the characters, who played an important role in the exploring process to the inner life of the characters and became a crucial part in the spiritual life of the characters.
