A Study of Verbal Irony of Round Characters in Pride and Prejudice from the Perspective of Echoic Interpretation Theory

反讽是简.奥斯丁小说《傲慢与偏见》最显著的特征。言语反讽即反语主要体现在诙谐的人物对话中,它对人物性格的塑造起到了重要作用。回应理论从认知角度研究言语反讽,突出了反语在塑造圆形人物中的作用,同时进一步证明了语言学理论应用于文学文本分析的可能性。

Irony stands as the most protruding characteristic in Austin＇s masterpiece Pride and Prejudice. Verbal irony which is mainly reflected in the witty conversations between characters contributes much to the wonderfully vivid presentation of characters. Echoic interpretation theory which studies verbal irony from the cognitive point of view highlights the role of ironical utterances in depicting round characters and demonstrates the possibility of applying linguistic theories to literature texts as well.
