Development of demulsification techniques for crude oil emulsion is one of the most important research topics in petroleum industry. The recent advances in the demulsification of crude oil emulsion are reviewed, with emphasis on chemical, physical, and microbial demulsification. The advantages of such demulsifacation methods are summarized and the important research directions in the application of these methods in commercial scale are discussed.
