Causes for the Revival of Clanship Power in Rural Areas of Hainan in the New Period

宗族形态在中国存在了几千年,在长期的发展中已经达到了相当完备的程度,并且具有顽强的生命力,这是海南农村宗族势力复兴的潜在因素。而海南农村固有的农耕性、聚居性和新制度的不完备以及农民在精神和心理上的需求等原因,导致了海南宗族势力在新时期的复兴。文章从小农经济、族居环境、宗族观念、新旧制度交替、精神和心理需求等五个方面探讨海南农村宗族势力复兴的原因。

Clanship, having existed in China for thousands of years, has become rather complete in its course of development and boasted indomitable power, which is the potential cause for the revival of clanship power in the rural areas of Hainan. In brief, it is the small-scale farming method, the inclination to assem- blage inherent to rural areas of Hainan, the imperfection of the new economic system, the needs of peasants in spirit and psychology, etc. have led to the revival of clanship power in Hainan during the new period. This paper attempts to probe into the causes for the revival of the clansman power in rural areas of Hainan in terms of the small-scale farmer economy, the living environment for clansmen, the notions of clanship, the transition between the old system and the new one, and the spiritual and psychological needs of peasants, etc.
