A Talk on the Scientific Development of Modern Universities

"建设什么样的大学"和"怎样建设这样的大学"是实现现代大学科学发展不可回避的问题。前者存在于后者之中,后者是前者的动力和根基。要解决"建设什么样的大学"的问题,就必须在现代大学制度的建立和创新中实践。学术自由和教授治校将使这两个问题的解决互为表里。"建设什么样的大学"产生于"怎样建设这样的大学"中,"怎样建设这样的大学"则蕴涵、滋润着"建设什么样的大学"。

Two issues are vital to fulfilling the scientific development of modem universities： ＂what universities should be built？＂ and ＂ how to build such universities？＂ in that the former is implicated ill the latter while the latter motivates and facilitates the former. The solution to the first issue--what universities should be built--must be found in the practice of establishing and renovating the systems for modem universities whereas academic freedom and the administration of universities by professors would be conducive to solving the two issues. As a matter of fact, the first issue of ＂what universities should be built＂ is included in the second issue of ＂how to build such universities＂ while the second one entails the first issue.
