Modern or Classical? Reinterpretation of the Architectural Language of Wen-Yuan Building

文远楼长期被看作中国早期杰出的现代主义建筑作品,文章通过分析发现:该建筑不仅仅体现出现代主义特征,在现代的形式之下还隐藏着多重西方古典建筑语言,是一个深具复杂性和矛盾性的作品。文章着重分析该建筑中所隐含的西方古典建筑语言特征,并从设计者的建筑思想角度探讨了作品具有复杂建筑语言的深层原因。

Wen-Yuan building, located in the campus of Tongji University, Shanghai, is considered as one of the prominent modern architecture in the early years of P.R, China. The paper identifies that the building not only implies a variety of influences of western classical architectural language, which appear to be a work of complicated and conflicting style, The paper focuses on the analysis of the western classical architectural language that implied in the building, and explores the reason for the complicated architectural languages in it as viewed from the idea of the architect.
