Toni Morrison, an Afro - American female writer, always keeps her ethnicity in literary creation, continually exploring and developing distinguished African cultural traditions. Her novel, Song of Solomon, is full of mysterious African cultural elements. In this novel, Morrison reproduces and rewrites the myth of flying Africans through depicting the flights of Black ancestor Solomon and his great grandson, Milkman. With recurrence of Blues, souls and Black ballads, she reveals the great significance of traditional African music to Blacks＇spiritual life. In the heroine＇s conversation with the soul of her dead father, she presents African ancestral worship. With creative application of the ancient folklore of flying Africans, Blacks＇musical tradition, and African ancestral worship, Morrison demonstrates the necessity of inheriting African cultural heritage and points out a way for Black people pursuing democracy and freedom. This novel, ingeniously conceived and pregnant with deep meaning, exhibits the tremendous value of African cultural heritage to Blacks, especially those who live under the siege of white mainstream culture.
