鸦片战争后,五邑民众开始出洋谋生。20世纪中期以前,随着侨汇的源源流入,侨眷的消费带动了五邑商贸的发展和墟市的繁盛,侨乡经济呈现出繁荣景象;抗日战争时期,日军封锁了中国沿海,侨汇中断使侨眷的生活处境迅速恶化;当代五邑侨乡的老年侨眷大多每年都能收到丰裕的侨汇,过着幸福安康的生活。

After the Opium War, the people in Wuyi region began to venture overseas to make a living. Prior to the middle of the 1900s, with the constant inflow of remittances from overseas, consumption thrived, and this promoted the development of commerce and market and the general economy. During the war against Japanese aggression, as the Chinese coast was blocked by Japanese, the remittances stopped and people＇s life quickly deteriorated. In contemporary times, most old relatives of overseas Chinese receive substantial remittances every year and live a secure and comfortable life.
