The Threat of Japanese Pirates in the Ming Dynasty and the Sino-Ryukyu Relations

古琉球王国与中国有着长期交往和密切联系。到明代,前后持续长达300余年的倭寇之患对中琉关系影响巨大。倭患使明政府的册封和琉球使团在华朝贡活动无法正常开展,并影响到中琉之间封贡贸易的进行。琉球政府协助明朝驱逐、抗击倭寇,促进了中琉关系的发展。

The old Ryukyu Kingdom maintained exchanges and close ties with China for a long period of time But during the Ming Dynasty, the 300--year-long Japanese pirate peril had huge impact on the relations between China and Ryukyu. The rampancy of Japanese pirates interrupted the conferring of titles to the Ryukyu kings and the paying of tributes to the Ming emperors as well as trade between China and Ryukyu. The Ryukyu Kingdom assisted Ming Empire in fighting and expelling the pirates, which promoted the development of the relations between China and Ryukyu.
