The postmodern "anti-detective fiction" is a subgenre that arrests increasing critical attention in eomtemporary literary criticism. Based on a brief survey of the essential features of the "anti-detective fiction", this paper illustrates, by a sample reading of Ishmael Reed's Mumbo Jumbo, how postmodemist texts like Reed's deeonstruet their precusor texts in terms of the genre's essential components: the mystery, the detective persona and the narrative structure. The paper argues that the cultural polities of antidetective texts is a contending issue that awaits further investigation.
