摘要
中国唐诗的英文译介是19世纪中期以后才开始出现于欧美各国的文化传播现象。在此传播的过程中,旅华传教士和驻华外交官群体中的汉学家贡献尤多。其中戴维斯的《汉文诗解》有特殊的价值,弗莱彻的《英译唐诗选》则是截至目前为止发现的最早的英译唐诗专著。我国学术界对早期英译唐诗的文本和译者研究尚处于起步阶段,其间的某些误读尚有待辨析和厘清。
The translation of the poetry of the Tang Dynasty (618--907 A. D. ) into English, an important type of cultural transmission, did not began in Europe and American until mid-nineteenth century. To this transmission the missionaries and diplomats to China made the greatest contribution. Among others, "The Poetry of the Chinese" (1870) by Sir John Francis Davis (1795--1890) is of considerable value, and "Gems from Chinese Verse" (1918) by W. J. B. Fletcher (1879--1933)is the earliest English-translated collection of the Tang poetry. The study on the English translation of the Tang poetry and on its translators is still in its infancy in China, and some confusions and misunderstandings in this field need due examinations and clarifications.
