Objective To investigate the expressions of α-catenin (α-cat) and β-catenin (β-cat) and their relation with development and prognosis of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Methods Expressions of α-cat and β-cat were immunohistochemically studied in 43 specimens of NSCLC and 7 cases of normal lung tissues. Results Of the 43 NSCLC cases, the abnormal rate of α- cat and β- cat expression was 72.1% and 65.1%, respectively. Differentiation and lymph node involvement had a significantly positive correlation with abnormal expression of α-cat or β-cat (P〈0.05). The survival time was significantly shorter in patients with α-cat or β-cat abnormal expression than in those with normal α-cat or β-cat expression, β-cat could serve as an independent prognosis factor (P〈0.05). Conclusion The expressions of α-cat and β-cat are closely correlated with the occurrence, development and prognosis of NSCLC. α-cat and β-cat may be used as indicators for development and prognosis of NSCLC.
