William Blake was the famous English poet of romantic poetry. He lived in poverty all his life and developed great hatred for the capitalists and great sympathy for the poor. He himself believed that beliefs in Christian doctrines could make people live happy lives. But the church used the Christian doctrines to con trol people's minds. William Blake wrote many poems that reflected the social reality of the 19th --century Britain. This paper aims to analyze the social reality from two aspects: poor people's miserable lives, the church's cruelty. Moreover, a brief introduction to William Blake and the historical background are introduced.
