Confucius’ Three Dimentions of Poetry

在孔子这里,诗的本质特性并不是基于诗的语言艺术的本性,而是它的仁义道德的层面,诗由此构成人性教育的一个重要组成部分,亦即开端。正是在这种意义上,孔子对诗作出基本规定:在心灵维度上,诗表现为抒情和洞见的能力;在社会维度上,诗教人如何成人;在自然维度上,诗揭示了人的存在的领域。基于此,诗最终成为了对仁义之道的言说。

Confucius regards virtue and moral, instead of poetic language, as the essential characteristics of poetry. He also regards poetry as a beginning of humanity education. So he makes a basic provision of poetry as followings： In the soul dimention, poetry can show human＇s sentiment and insight; In the social dimention, poetry can teach a person how to be a human; In the natural dimention, poetry can reveal the field which human existing in. Eventually, poetry is an expression means of his Benevolence.
