1 Theory on Superficial Puncture and Cupping Dr. YANG recommended "superficial puncture". "Superficial puncture" is named so depending upon the implication of "superficial puncture meaning regulation". Namely, this technique has the effects to regulate yin and yang, regulate and dredge qi and blood in the meridians and collaterals. The needle tool corresponding to "superficial puncture" is "superficial needle". Based upon the descriptions of "the theory of nine needles" and "nine needles and twelve resources" in Ling Shu (Spiritual Pivot). Dr.
YANG Yong-quan (1901-1981), anative of Nanhui county of Shanghai,studied with WANG Song-yu, afamous acupuncturist in Pudongarea, at the age of seventeen. Hereturned to his hometown, Zhouputown, to practice medicine, after hecompleted his study at the age oftwenty. In 1937, he migrated to practice medicine inShanghai, specialized in acupuncture and also skillful ininternal medicine, with famous reputation in the area ofShanghai. After the founding of People's Republich ofChina, he was appointed as the director of acupuncturedepartment of Shanghai No. 11 People's Hospital, directorof acupuncture department of Shuguang Hospital, deputydirector of acupuncture faculty of Shanghai College ofTraditional Chinese Medicine, deputy director of ShanghaiResearch Institute of Acupuncture and Meridian, anddirectorial member of Shanghai Association ofAcupuncture and Moxibustion. His posthumous work isZhen Jiu Zhi Yan Lu (Collection of AcupunctureExperience).
