During the early statehood period, the German Democratic Republic (GDR) adhered to the "one nation" view and actively strived for the unity of the country and the nation. However, with domestic and international changes, the Government of the Socialist Unity Party of Germany continued to concede the argument of national unity, and ultimately in the 1970s proposed the "two nations" theory and practiced the national separatist policy. The adjustment of the national unity policy not only failed to protect the long-term stability in Germany, also led to the lost of GDR's leadership position to solve the national problem, which is an important factor of GDR's demise.
