On the Construction of Living Democracy in Contemporary China

民主的核心内涵可以简明归纳为三层:价值观、政体和生活方式。在讨论当代中国的政治文明发展时,中外学术界和政治舆论界都有意无意地忽视了当代中国的生活民主进程。中国今天的生活世界及背后的基本价值观,早已融入诸多外来和现代元素、同时也承接自身悠久文化传统的多元开放体系。中国未来的生活民主建设也将是一项公众性、社会性、参与式、探询式的公共事业。

The core meanings of democracy can be divided into three levels： values, political system and life style. When discussing the development of contemporary Chinese political civilization, both scholars and the political opinion circle, intentionally or unintentionally, often pay little attention to the progress of living democracy in contemporary China. The contemporary Chinese living world, with its basic values, has already absorbed many foreign and modern elements and at the same time still keeps the open pluralistic system of its longtime cultural tradition. The construction of living democracy in China will be a participatory and exploratory social public undertaking.
