Over the years, people strolling or jogging on the undulating black and white cobblestones of Co- pacabana's palm tree-lined seafront promenade became a synonym of Rio de Janeiro's lifestyle, so imbued in popular culture that it now stands as an icon of Brazil itself. The timelessness of the design simurtaneously pays homage to the Portuguese-style sidewalks (known as calcada portuguesa) and breaks with its tradition. It is fluid, open-ended and it deconstructs century- old shapes, simplifying them to their purest. The same classic patterns were then attributed new, colorful characters that got imprinted along the whooping 5 km of sunny Avenida Atlantica (At- lantic Avenue). Seen from the air, the sidewalks turn into gigantic canvases with an abstract painting.
