The Role of Green Infrastructure in Climate Change

Climate change is challenging the way our urban areas are built, and the way the green spaces within those urban areas are planned and managed. In England, most people live in towns and cities. These urban areas have a great deal of greenspace. This paper argues that if we need our towns and cities to remain engines of prosperity, they must adapt to climate change, as well as help to mitigate climate change itself. This is not simply to design and maintain public parks and green spaces to be more resilient to a changing climate, but to adapt the green infrastructure of urban areas to an important new role in protecting the whole of the urban area from the consequences of inevitable climate change.
