Michel Foucault's discourse theory demonstrates the fact that discourse is the product of power, whereas power exerts great but invisible influences on discourse practice. Discourse power is not only repressive, but also productive. Power must be considered from the "bottom up", which offers us better understandings of the relationship between discourse and power. Taking Michel Foucault's theory as the framework, this paper analyzes how the man and the woman construct and then contend discourse power and finally how the woman attempts to deconstruct the man's discourse power in Ernest Hemingway's short story Hills Like White Elephants. It is designed to shed some light on the nature of discourse and power through their discourse suppression and interaction.
