In the situation of collision between Chinese and western cultures in the late Qing Dynasty, Chen Lanbin made telling contributions in advancing overseas education of Chinese, visiting the United States, protecting the interests of overseas Chinese, and caring about his countrymen＇s livelihood and education. His efforts reflected the sense of social responsibility of the traditional scholar-bureaucrats, which served as the motivation for their behavior.
