他汀类药物是羟甲基戊二酰辅酶A(HMG-CoA)还原酶的竞争性抑制剂,可抑制内源性胆固醇的合成和刺激低密度脂蛋白(LDL)受体的合成,临床上被广泛用来治疗高胆固醇血症。大量的研究发现,他汀类药物除了显著地降低胆固醇、抗动脉粥样硬化和心血管保护作用之外,还具有独立于此之外的其它作用,如肺、肾保护作用、延缓肾衰竭进展、抑制动脉瘤的形成和扩张作用、抗肿瘤作用、促进骨形成作用、促进伤口愈合作用、以及降低感染性休克的死亡风险等多方面的作用。

Statins is known as a cholesterol-lowering agent that inhibits 3-hydroxy-3-methyl glutaryl coenzyme A （HMG-CoA） reductase and can lower the risk of cardiovascular events by reducing plasma cholesterol levels. Except their treating hypercholesteremia and protection cardiac and vascular function, considerable studies have revealed that statins have effects independent of their cholesterol-lowering effects, refered to as pleiotropic effects. It has been shown that statins also have effects of protecting lung and kidney, preventing the development of renal dysfunction, antitumor activity, playing a role in the management of abdominal aortic aneurysms, promoting bone formation, helping to treat type 2 diabetes-related wound healing disoreders, having the role in altering the host response to bacterial infections and then lowering the risk of death and so on.
